Facebook disables my profile because my last name is Istanbul
My facebook profile was disabled by facebook admin without warning last night. They claim that I'm using a "fake name" because my last name is Istanbul. My last name has been Istanbul since the day I was born.I have been locked out of my account and have no recourse other than to email them and wait. Even though I am willing and able to provide them with proof of my name and identity, they have not acknowledged my offer in this regard. My multiple appeals through email seem to be falling on deaf ears.
Today they disabled my sister's account for the same reason. My mother and cousin, whose last names are also Istanbul, were forced to misspell their last names in order open their accounts recently. This is both ironic and contradictory to facebook's official policy on the use of fake names: "We do not allow users to register with fake names, to impersonate any person or entity, or to falsely state or otherwise misrepresent themselves or their affiliations."
I find it frustrating that they have disabled my account without warning. They have not told me if or when they will be reinstating my profile. In the meantime I have been cut off from all my contacts, and the content in my account, which belongs to me.
I can't help but feel that I'm being discriminated against because of my un-American sounding last name.
You can show your support by joining this facebook group that my friend Clare started for me.

Hmm...interesting. It's a poorly thought out methodology for preventing racist and otherwise denigrating account names. But then it begs to question, what is *wrong* with Istanbul...it'd be different if your last name were actually, [insert something derogatory]. I'm curious to see what their resolution will be as well as what people named English, French, Brown, Black, and White are doing about this...
This is insane. What is wrong with Istanbul anyway? *shakes head*
Absolutely bloody bonkers!!
Can you contact facebook admin?
I'm sorry!!
Thanks for your comments and support, everyone.
I've been emailing admin since yesterday and sent them a link to the facebook group that Clare started for me. They have not replied.
I wish I knew what more I could do. Please join the facebook group and spread the word if you can.
Facebook needs to stop discriminating against people just because they have interesting names!
There IS more that you can do. Have a lawyer send them a letter to re-instate your account or face legal prosecution on grounds of discrimination.
Hi Alicia,
Ron (of Julia, Summer and Ron) here. :) Julia told me about your situation. That's an odd one for sure. Save your lawyer money, that route wouldn't do you any good. Facebook reserves the right to delete accounts/data/content for a lot worse reasons than yours. It's spelled out in the `disclaimers' portion of their Terms of Use. "The company reserves the right to change any and all content ... at any time without notice." Moreover, no one has any type of legal `right' to use Facebook, hence legal recourse is limited.
That said, if you'd like me to reach out to Facebook and get an better explanation, I can. I have a feeling they'd take my call. Their rubric for account deletion seems suspect at best.
Cheers,
Ron
Thanks for the advice, Ron. If you'd like to reach out them on my behalf, I would so greatly appreciate it. Obviously whatever *I'm* doing is not enough.
I just found a link to your blog via Twitter and I think this is crazy! I reposted it hopefully it will light a fire under someone.
Thank you Handmade Guru :)
