What I did today - Work in Progress Wednesday
I'm taking part in the "Charm Swap 4" with 19 other metalsmiths from Etsy Metal. Read more about it at the Etsy Metal Blog.

This is the charm I'm making. In the style of my Lucky Charm pendants, I decided on an anvil (because of what it symbolizes to us metalsmiths), hand drawn and etched in sterling silver. And an inspirational "create" tag alongside it, handwritten and etched in bronze.
Here are some work-in-progress pics for your enjoyment.

The original drawing of my anvil. All my stuff starts out this way - pen on paper.
I forgot to take pictures of the etching part. So let's pretend there's a picture of some metal being etched here:

Ok, the metal is etched. Now it needs to be cut.

This is me hammering out the anvils into circles with my handy dandy disc cutter. Some tools make life so easy.

Voila, metal is cut.

Soldering tags to the backs of the anvil charms. The tags have my initials stamped in them, along with a copyright stamp, .925 stamp, and the letters "em cs4" (Etsy Metal Charm Swap 4)

Cleaning up the sharp edges with my silicone sanding wheel.
Tomorrow I'll post of a pictures of all 22 completed charms.
(you can click on the pictures to make them bigger).

I love seeing peoples work spaces! You have a beautiful etsy shop and I love your jewelry. Such unique pieces.
Wow! That's a great visual progression of the progress. I love, love the professor pic too!
I love seeing your drawings come to life!
Thanks so much guys!
That's a great charm and I love your progress report.
I LOVE it! I completely admire metal artists. I wish I had the time...and the money to invest learning to do what you do. Perhaps when my little ones get older. Your work is so beautiful.
Thanks, Alyssa. I can recommend a few good teach-yourself books if you're interested...
Yes, I would love some recommendations. I just got a library card recently and need new reading material!
what a cool swap! i love your interlude of the metal etching.. heehee. i had that "weird science" song in my head as soon as i saw it.
I love the shots of you working...fabulous!
xxx
it's great to see the progress AND your studio is sooo tidy!! i'm embarrassed to show you how messy mine gets with so many things going on at once...
love the anvil charms!!!
It's an illusion, Ceeb. It looks tidy from afar, but really it is embarrassingly very, very messy ;)
I am covetous of your ability to create objects. Painting and words are so ephemeral, but your work is both beautiful and just so *real*. Love it! And great veggie shots, too!
