Strange Bedfellows

Apparently some new tenants have made themselves at home in the azalea bushes of our front yard.  When I walked past it this morning, the sound of the crunching leaves beneath my feet disrupted the tranquil repose of no less than a dozen (otherwise perfectly camouflaged) buttery yellow butterflies.  They all sprung up into the air at once and caught me by surprise. It was a bit a sight to see, this bevy of butterflies capering about in the air before me.  I felt like I should find a meadow to start dancing through...

And then I noticed her

She's back...just as she is every October. With her intimidating wide-legged stance, and impressive zippered web.  And don't be mistaken by the camera's inability to convey scale.  She's huge.

It's a pretty spectacular sight. And not one for the faint of heart, let me tell ya. But, I myself am a fan of the arachnid species.  I actually love them because they eat cockroaches, etc, etc. This beautiful monstrosity is about 2.5" long from toe to toe.

In any case, the butterflies are happily cavorting about out there.  Seemingly unconcerned with the possibility of meeting an untimely demise at the hands of one enormous spider on a web that spans the length of the azalea bush they're prancing through.

The butterflies are cool! Spiders don't bother me as long as they're outside!

Wow! There does seem to be a lot of spiders around right now!

We came back from our trip to find snakes living in our garden, seems as though they like to eat the baby moles, what next?????

Have a great weekend, T. :)

I have these enormous spiders that always park themselves in the same place. The webs are spectacular. I actually have to admit it - I love spiders - especially big ones.

I went out a little later to see if I could catch a picture of all the butterflies in flight, but they had moved on. Not a single one to be found (neither in the bush nor in the web) :)

Oh. Dear. God. I think I just peed a little! Well, not really, but that is one monstrosity of a spider! Faint of heart? Me? Absolutely. Oh. Dear. God.

We have some of those (or similar anyway) big babies around here. The last one I saw was in the trees at the zoo, in the bird exhibit. I appreciate spiders...from afar. That is, as long as they aren't poisonous. I can still appreciate those, but I don't want them anywhere near me!

Each time I see a spider I am jerking. As Annette wrote: spiders do not bother me as long as they are outside. But now in fall, they are coming in, looking for a cosy place. uagh!!!
